TRIBUNNEWS.COM - Merokok adalah kebiasaan buruk yang mengancam kesehatan jantung dan pembuluh darah. Penelitian terbaru menunjukkan, rokok meningkatkan risiko terkena stroke, dan ancaman terbesar adalah pada mereka yang menghisap rokok mentol.

Seperti dimuat jurnal Archives of Internal Medicine, peneliti menyatakan mereka yang memilih rokok mentol cenderung berisiko lebih besar terkena stroke ketimbang penghisap rokok non-mentol.
Menurut studi para ilmuwan Kanada ini, risiko stroke yang lebih nyata ditemukan pada perokok mentol perempuan dan mereka dari keturunan non-Afrika.
Penulis studi itu pun menyarankan agar rokok mentol benar-benar dihindari guna menekan risiko stroke. Dan satu hal yang penting, semua jenis rokok haruslah dihindari karena dapat menimbulkan risiko penyakit.
"Semuanya memang buruk, semuanya sudah dikatakan. Dari perspektif reduksi bahaya, studi ini menyarankan untuk menghindari rokok setidaknya jenis mentol," kata Nicholas Vozoris, petugas klinik di St. Michael’s Hospital di Toronto, Kanada.
Dalam studinya, Vozoris menggunakan informasi yang diambil dari survei gaya hidup dan kesehatan yang mencakup 5.028 perokok dewasa. Survei itu dilakukan antara 2001 sampai 2008.
Secara keseluruhan, sebanyak 26 persen responden menyatakan mereka biasa menghisap rokok mentol, dan sisanya menghisap rokok non-mentol.
Beberapa ahli berpendapat, mentol mempermudah orang untuk mulai belajar merokok dan lebih sulit untuk berhenti, sebab rasanya menyamarkan kerasnya aroma tembakau.
Di antara penghisap rokok mentol, sebanyak 3,4 persen mengatakan mereka pernah menderita stroke. Sementara itu, sebanyak 2,7 persen perokok tanpa mentol terserang stroke.
Setelah memperhitungkan beberapa faktor seperti jenis kelamin, suku dan usia perokok serta jumlah rokok yang dihisap, Vozoris menyimpulkan bahwa penghisap rokok mentol berisiko dua kali lipat terkena stroke dibandingkan dengan mereka yang merokok non-mentol. Perbedaan tersebut sangat jelas pada kaum perempuan dan perokok dari suku selain Afro-Amerika.
Di antara peserta studi, stroke tiga kali lebih umum ditemukan di kalangan penghisap rokok mentol. Walau begitu, Vozoris mengatakan studi tersebut tak bisa membuktikan bahwa hanya rokok mentol saja yang mengakibatkan peningkatan resiko stroke, karena ada perbedaan lain yang tak terukur antara penghisap rokok mentol dan tanpa mentol.
Studi tersebut juga menyatakan, rokok mentol tidak berkaitan dengan peningkatan risiko tekanan darah tinggi, penyakit paru-paru kronis atau pun serangan jantung dibandingkan dengan rokok standar.
Presiden American Heart Association (AHA) dan Direktur Bagian Kardiologi di Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Gordon Tomaselli berpendapat, studi tersebut telah memperlihatkan keterkaitan antara kebiasaan merokok mentol dan risiko stroke, tetapi tidak berhubungan dengan tekanan darah tinggi.
Menurut Vozoris, mungkin saja kandungan mentol pada asap rokok memiliki efek yang lebih buruk pada pembuluh darah, terutama pembuluh yang memasok oksigen ke otak.
